"Evenings Ease" Court

a seniors' housing community being developed by the

DUNCAN CHRISTIAN SENIOR HOME SOCIETY

Many people retire on Vancouver Island because of : the mild climate, the scenic setting and the recreational opportunities.  Duncan is centrally located between Victoria and Nanaimo in the Cowichan Valley, which has the highest average temperatures in Canada.  The Valley is surrounded by tree covered mountains, three rivers flow through it, there are several lakes and ocean beaches are nearby.  Residents can hike or bike the trails, camp in the parks, swim, play golf (5 golf courses nearby), fish, boat, sightsee, or picnic in this gentle valley.  For those who prefer indoor activities, there is a community center which provides entertainment like the Victoria Symphony or the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.  the center has a swimming pool, library, skating rink, dining lounge, and day and evening programs.

Evenings Ease Court is the start of a housing and care project being developed in Duncan, BC.  It's purpose is to provide affordable and comfortable  accommodations for seniors over 55 and disabled persons, with a focus on Christian fellowship and faith.   This housing complex is intended to enhance the quality of life for elderly christians in a caring environment that will add to their years of independent living.

In the first phases of construction sixteen strata title homes (eight single homes and four side-by-side duplex units: and a hobby/recreation facility were built.

In the next phase additional garden style patio homes will be built and possibly an intermediate or congregate care facility will also be added.

The Homes

The 2-bedroom homes are spacious by design because they are wheelchair accessible.  Units range from 991 square feet to 1215 square feet.  Doorways are wide and the four piece bathroom is large.  The living room and dining room form an open area, the dining room is set off by a small jog in the wall where a door leads to a back patio.

The homes include appliances like refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, washer and dryer.  The kitchens feature oak cabinets.  There is a small bathroom near the front door while the main bathroom down the hallway is also accessible from the master bedroom.

The development is located in a quiet residential area that is close to churches, shopping, and activities at schools and playing fields.

Christian Community

Residents of Evening's Ease Court often arrange their own activities.  They hold game evenings twice a week when they play card and board games together.  They also organize activities for larger groups in the recreation building.

While everyone has the privacy of their own homes, they are close enough to maintain friendships, visit and assist those who are in need of help.  Like a small community the residents can readily walk across the street to visit their neighbours.  It is part of the society's goal to facilitate a christian caring community of seniors.
